이상용 작가의 ‘난다고래’와 ‘Manta ray’ 시리즈는 아내를 만나 결혼하면서 시작되었다.

작가의 아내는 과거의 추억을 새로운 감각으로 되살리게 해주었고, 함께한 경험들을 색다른 시선으로 바라보도록 이끌어주었다. 철학자 그레이엄 하먼이 『비유물론』에서 말했듯, 외부적 존재와의 융합은 이전에는 존재하지 않았던, 심지어 스스로도 인식하지 못했던 새로운 자아의 탄생을 가능하게 한다. 이상용 작가에게 그 특별한 계기는 고래를 좋아하는 아내를 만났던 순간이었다.

‘난다고래’는 고래를 사랑하는 아내를 위해 준비한 작은 선물에서 출발했다. 아내를 향한 마음과 함께한 기억이 작품으로 형상화되었고, 그 흐름은 ‘Manta ray’ 시리즈로 이어졌다. ‘보이지 않는다고 해서 존재하지 않는 것은 아니며, 새로운 존재와의 우연한 만남을 통한 교감은 각 객체에 극적인 변화를 가져온다’는 메시지를 담고 있다.

이상용 작가는 다양한 작가들과의 협업을 통해 공예의 사회적 역할에 대한 깊이 있는 철학을 공유하며, 대중이 공감할 수 있는 작품을 선보여왔다. 공예를 매개로 다양한 세대와 계층이 유대감을 형성할 수 있다고 믿으며, 그 생각은 가구, 오브제, 도자기 등 다양한 형태로 표현된다.

대표작 ‘난다고래’는 혹등고래에서 영감을 받은 키네틱 아트 작품이다. 무게 중심을 정교하게 설계하여, 살랑이는 바람에도 고래가 유영하듯 부드럽게 움직인다. 불규칙하게 흔들리는 그 움직임은 마치 매 순간 새로운 생명을 부여받는 듯한 인상을 준다. 날개 지느러미와 몸체의 무게 균형은 치밀하게 조율되어, 어느 한쪽으로도 치우치지 않은 채 넓은 바다를 자유롭게 항해하는 고래의 모습을 재현한다.

멀리서 고래가 물기둥을 뿜으며 유영하는 장면이나, 돌고래 떼가 물보라를 일으키며 지나가는 장면을 떠올리게 하는 ‘난다고래’는 단순한 오브제를 넘어서는 특별한 감각의 경험이다. 이 작품은 고래를 사랑하는 아내를 향한 애정 어린 선물이자, 일상 속 소중한 기억을 깨우는 바람의 고래로 남는다.


Lee Sang Yong’s Flying Whale and Manta Ray series began when he met and married his wife.

His wife helped him rediscover memories of the past and see shared experiences from new perspectives. As Graham Harman describes in Immaterialism, it was through merging with an external being—his wife—that a new self emerged, one that had never existed before and that he himself had not known.

This special memory was rekindled when he met his wife, who loves whales. The Flying Whale began as a small gift for her.

Manta Ray carries the message that “just because something is invisible does not mean it doesn’t exist,” and that chance encounters with new presences can create profound transformations in each object.

Swimming Art, Kinetic Sculpture

Lee Sang Yong collaborates with various artists to share a philosophy about the social role of craft, presenting works that audiences can easily connect with. He emphasizes that craft has an essential role in fostering bonds across different generations and social groups, and expresses this through furniture, objects, ceramics, and more.

His signature work Flying Whale is a kinetic sculpture inspired by the humpback whale. It is carefully weighted so that even a gentle breeze sets it in motion, allowing the whale to appear as though it is swimming gracefully. Its irregular, swaying movements reveal new gestures each time, with precisely balanced fins and body that never tip too far in any direction—faithfully evoking a whale sailing freely across the ocean.

From a distance, the piece may remind viewers of a whale slowly surfacing to spray water into the sky or a pod of dolphins racing by, stirring up waves. While these are extraordinary experiences, Flying Whale has its roots in the simple, everyday moments that became precious memories. It is a small gift for the wife who loves whales—a “whale of the wind” that revives treasured recollections.
