Gerd Kanz, born in 1966 in Erlangen, Germany, is a contemporary artist renowned for his distinctive practice that moves fluidly between painting and sculpture. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg under Professors Scharl and Grützke, where he developed the artistic foundation that continues to inform his work.

Kanz is known for creating what he describes as “drawings” made not with a brush, but through the forceful and meticulous use of hammer and chisel. He carves, cuts, and reassembles wooden panels, building textured surfaces that evoke the feel of stone, earth, dried flowers, or weathered metal. The resulting works hover between two-dimensional painting and three-dimensional relief, their surfaces marked by traces of repeated movement, cuts, and recombinations that embody the tension and unpredictability of creation itself.

As an enthusiastic gardener, Kanz places the essence of growth at the center of his artistic exploration. His blue-toned pieces often feature organic, natural forms contrasted sharply against artificial color fields, generating a visual tension that underscores the dynamic interplay between nature and culture. Many of his wall objects and arched sculptures reference elements of Christian architectural forms, reinterpreted through an abstract contemporary lens.

Rather than completing one piece at a time, Kanz prefers to work on multiple pieces simultaneously, developing them in groups. Since holding his first solo exhibition in 1994 at Kunstverein Coburg, Kanz has presented over 55 solo shows and participated in more than 86 group exhibitions across Germany, Spain, and the United States. His works have been shown internationally in cities including New York and Amsterdam. A highlight of his career came with his 70th solo exhibition at Veste Coburg Castle, where he presented 60 works ranging from small, intimate panels to large-scale installations exceeding two meters in height.

Working with traditional materials in highly experimental ways, Kanz creates poetic and enigmatic compositions that dissolve the boundaries between the natural and the man-made.
