강동현 작가의 작업에서 ‘공존’이라는 키워드는 유기적인 그물망 구조로 응집된다. 그는 인간과 자연, 사회를 구성하는 관계들을 인체의 혈관, 식물의 세포, 통신 기기의 전자파, 도로, 항로 등 복합적인 연결망으로 바라본다. 이 관계들은 뫼비우스의 띠처럼 시작과 끝이 없이 얽히며, 끊임없이 새로운 네트워크를 생성해낸다.

알렉스 라이트가 언급한 바와 같이, 생물학적 계층들이 상호작용하며 더 높은 차원의 질서를 형성하듯, 강동현의 작업은 위계 없이 수평적으로 연결된 유기적 관계망의 가능성을 탐색한다. 누구도 ‘꼭대기’에 서지 않는 구조 속에서, 그는 다양한 존재들이 상호 의존하며 살아가는 방식을 시각화한다.

작가는 스테인리스 스틸을 용접해 그물망 형태의 공간과 구조물을 구축한다. 이 비어 있으면서도 채워진 듯한 모호한 형상은 내부와 외부의 경계를 허물며, 나무 형상들이 모여 이룬 숲 속에서 생명의 응집을 이끌어낸다.

‘공존의 숲’ 시리즈는 짧은 스테인리스 스틸 봉으로 구성된 구체 구조를 중심으로 한다. 그 안팎에 떠 있는 오브제들은 서로 절묘한 관계를 맺으며, 비어 있음과 형상이 공존하는 독특한 조형적 풍경을 만들어낸다. 이 구조는 동식물, 인체, 풍경화, 정물화, 인물화 등으로 확장되며, 다양한 생명과 사물의 관계성을 새로운 시각으로 풀어낸다.

강동현은 나무가 모여 숲을 이루듯, 생명이 모여 또 다른 생명을 낳는 과정을 통해 생명과 생명 사이에 존재하는 보이지 않는 연결성을 시각화한다. 그의 작업은 생명 간의 공존, 그리고 그 끊임없는 순환에 대한 조형적 사유이자 시적인 탐구이다.


In Kang Dong Hyun’s work, the concept of coexistence finds form through intricate mesh structures. He perceives relationships as networks akin to the veins of the human body, the cells of plants, electromagnetic waves in our devices, roads, flight paths, and shipping lanes—endlessly interwoven, like a Möbius strip with neither beginning nor end.

As Alex Wright has noted, self-organizing biological hierarchies interact to create higher-order networks. Similarly, Kang’s art explores the possibility of organic connection, where no single point stands at the top and every element contributes equally.

Using welded stainless steel, Kang constructs spaces and forms resembling nets. Their ambiguity—simultaneously empty and filled—dissolves boundaries between inside and outside. In his Forest of Coexistence series, the short steel rods form spherical exteriors encasing objects that seem to float like islands on water, each element maintaining a delicate relationship.

These forms coexist in their emptiness and material presence, engaging in new dialogues with the surrounding negative space. Through references to plants, animals, the human body, and landscapes, Kang’s work continually expands its inquiry into relationality.

Just as trees gather to form a forest, life accumulates and births new life, always in motion and transformation. By visualizing the invisible threads that connect all living things on Earth, Kang Dong Hyun offers a reflection on the perpetual cycle of life and the coexistence that sustains it.
