포리 심 작가는 인간에게 사랑받던 상품의 부품들이 유행이 지나거나 기능을 잃은 뒤 버려지는 현실에 주목한다. 폐플라스틱은 400~500년 동안 썩지 않지만, 인간이 사용하는 기간은 고작 10년이 채 되지 않는다.

한때 모니터, 휴대폰, 라디오를 이루던 부품들은 버려지지만, 그의 손길을 통해 ‘미술품’이라는 새로운 삶을 얻게 된다. 썩지 않는 플라스틱은 오랜 보존이 필요한 미술작품의 재료로 적합하며, 작가는 이를 로봇 형태로 재탄생시켜 갤러리에서 다시 사람들과 마주하게 한다.

정성스럽게 만들어졌던 부품들은 재창조의 과정을 거치며 다시 소중한 존재로 자리 잡는다. 이제 더 이상 소비되지 않고 소장되며 긴 생을 이어간다. 작품은 직접 움직이거나 말을 하진 않지만, 관람객의 상상력을 자극하며 생명력을 부여한다. 포리 심은 시각적 힘을 통해 죽은 것들을 살아 있는 것처럼 표현하는 작업을 이어간다.

신세대 작가로 주목받는 포리 심은 용도 폐기된 전자제품과 장난감을 모아 새로운 생명을 불어넣는 업사이클링 아트를 선보인다. 물질문명의 부산물이 지닌 해악을 젊은 감각과 유머로 풀어내며, 동화적이고 키덜트적인 감성을 담은 로봇 조형으로 재탄생시킨다.

Fori Sim is an artist who draws attention to the reality that components of products once cherished by people are discarded as soon as they fall out of fashion or lose their function. While discarded plastic can take 400 to 500 years to decompose, its actual use by humans rarely exceeds a decade.

Parts that once made up monitors, mobile phones, and radios are thrown away, but through the artist’s hands, they are reborn into a new life as works of art. Imperishable plastic becomes an ideal material for art that must be preserved over long periods, and Sim transforms these materials into robot-like forms that once again meet viewers in galleries.

These meticulously crafted components, through the process of re-creation, regain their value as precious objects. No longer consumed or discarded, they instead continue a long existence as collectible artworks. Though the pieces do not move or speak, they spark the viewer’s imagination and exude a sense of life. Through the power of visual language, Sim gives dead objects the appearance of being alive.

Recognized as a next-generation artist, Fori Sim creates upcycled artworks by gathering discarded electronics and toys and breathing new life into them. With a youthful sensibility and humor, he transforms the by-products of material civilization into robots imbued with a fairytale-like and kidult (kid-adult) aesthetic.

His work goes beyond simple recycling, delivering a message about the importance of environmental preservation and reminding us of the enduring value of sustainability through artistic expression.
