수곡(守谷) 손대현 장인은 열다섯에 나전의 아름다움에 이끌려 옻칠 세계에 입문한 이후, 60여 년간 칠하고, 말리고, 갈아내는 과정을 반복해왔다. 겹겹이 쌓인 옻칠에는 보이지 않는 시간이 응축돼 있으며, 은은한 결에는 수행과 절제의 미감이 밀도 있게 스며 있다. 그의 조형 언어는 ‘속’을 만드는 일에서 출발해, 보이는 것 너머를 향한 응축으로 이어진다. 

‘수곡(守谷)’이라는 아호는 전통을 지키되, 시대의 흐름을 유연하게 받아들이는 그의 철학을 담고 있다.

그는 전통을 지키되, 동시대와의 소통을 멈추지 않는다. 재료와 기법은 옛 것을 지키며 작업하되, 완성된 형태는 지금의 감각과 호흡한다. 이는 전통 공예의 뿌리를 유지하면서도, 동시대 미감으로 확장해 나간다.

손대현은 항아리, 기물, 가구, 생활 오브제 등을 통해 공예가 일상 속에서 어떻게 머무르고 감각될 수 있는지를 제안한다. 기능을 넘어서 삶에 스며드는 형태, 감각과 시간이 축적된 표면, 고요히 존재하는 물성의 밀도를 통해 공예가 담을 수 있는 깊이와 태도를 드러낸다.

수곡 손대현은 여러 국내외 전시 및 기획전에 참여하며, 장인의 기술과 예술가의 시선을 결합한 독창적인 작업으로 한국 공예계에서 확고한 위치를 구축해왔다. 그의 작업은 전통성과 현대성, 조형성과 실용성, 감각과 정신이 만나는 지점에서 공예의 현재성과 지속 가능성에 대한 질문을 던지고 있다.

Sugok Sohn Daehyun entered the world of traditional lacquer at the age of fifteen, drawn by the beauty of mother-of-pearl. Over the past 60 years, he has devoted himself to the repeated process of applying, drying, and polishing lacquer, layer by layer. Within these accumulated surfaces lies invisible time, and in the subtle grain, a quiet density formed through discipline and a refined sense of aesthetics. His sculptural language begins with shaping the “inner form” and condenses over time toward what lies beyond the visible.

His pen name, Sugok (守谷), meaning “to guard the valley,” reflects his philosophy of honoring tradition while embracing the flow of the present.

He preserves tradition, yet never ceases to engage with the present. While his materials and techniques remain rooted in the old, the finished forms breathe with a contemporary sensibility. His work maintains the foundations of traditional craft while expanding them through the aesthetics of our time.

Through vessels, furniture, and everyday objects, he explores how craft can reside in daily life as a form that breathes with quiet presence. His work transcends mere function, proposing craft as a medium that absorbs time, invites touch, and accumulates sensibility. The layered materiality, tactile stillness, and temporal depth reveal the posture and potential that craft can embody.

Sugok Sohn Daehyun has participated in numerous exhibitions and curated projects both in Korea and internationally. With a distinctive practice that unites the precision of the artisan and the perspective of the artist, he has secured a firm position in the Korean craft scene. His work operates at the convergence of tradition and modernity, form and function, sensibility and spirit—raising questions about the present and future of craft.
