김미숙 작가는 옻칠한 캔버스를 말리고 사포로 연마하는 과정을 수십 번 반복해 작품을 완성한다. 높은 온•습도에서 건조해야 하기에 기다리는 과정 또한 섬세함이 요구된다. 하나하나의 과정에 삶과 닮은 철학이 스며있다.

작가는 가장 아름답고 빛나는 찰나의 순간, 그 기억을 영원히 간직하고자 하는 마음을 한 폭의 초상에 담았다. 작가는 "수행하듯 반복하는 옻칠의 과정을 통해 마주한 이 아름다움이 흠 없는 완벽이 아닌 세월 속 마주한 상처들을 통해 얻어진 강인한 아름다움임을, 그래서 더 가치 있음을 보여주고 싶다."라고 말한다. 이 매력적인 초상을 통해 작가는 자신이 믿는 것을 우리도 보게 만든다. 유한의 아름다움, 그 안에 내재하는 존엄이 사각의 틀 밖으로 퍼져 관객의 마음을 사로잡는다.

Kim Misook completes her works through a labor-intensive process of repeatedly drying and sanding layers of lacquer applied to canvas. As the material must cure under conditions of high temperature and humidity, the act of waiting becomes an integral part of the practice, demanding both precision and patience. Within each stage, a philosophy emerges—one that closely parallels the rhythms of life itself.

The artist captures the most radiant and fleeting moments of beauty, preserving them within a single portrait as a gesture toward permanence. As she notes, “Through the repetitive, almost meditative process of lacquering, I came to understand that this beauty is not one of flawless perfection, but of resilience—formed through the wounds encountered over time, and therefore all the more valuable.”

Through these compelling portraits, Kim invites the viewer to perceive what she herself has come to believe: the beauty of the finite, and the dignity it contains. This quiet yet profound presence extends beyond the confines of the frame, resonating deeply within the viewer.
