손대현 개인전

수곡 손대현 장인은 열다섯에 나전의 아름다움에 매료되어 옻칠에 입문한 후, 60여 년 동안 칠을 하고, 말리고, 갈아내는 공정을 반복해왔다. 겹겹이 쌓인 옻칠 속에는 보이지 않는 시간이 응축돼 있으며, 은은한 결 안에는 축적된 수행과 절제된 미감이 만든 밀도가 깃들어 있다. 보이는 것 너머의 세계, 속을 만드는 것에서 시작된 손대현의 조형 언어는 오랜 시간 정신의 깊이를 따라 응집되어 왔다.

손대현은 전통을 지키는 동시에, 지금 이 시대와 어떻게 소통할 것인지에 대해 끊임없이 고민해왔다. “재료와 기법, 과정에서는 옛 것을 지키는 작업을 하되, 완성된 기물은 이 시대와 소통을 해야 한다”는 그의 말처럼, 옻칠과 나전의 깊은 뿌리를 유지하면서도, 표현은 언제나 현재의 감각과 호흡하려는 명확한 방향성을 품고 있다. 

이번 전시 《Abide, 머무는 형태》는 항아리와 그릇, 가구와 생활 오브제를 중심으로 구성된다. 전통 공예가 ‘머무는’ 자리, 곧 일상 속에서 어떻게 함께 숨 쉬는 형태로서 감각되는지를 제안한다. 공예는 단순한 사물이 아니다. 삶에 스며들며 감각과 시간을 축적하는 매개이자 구조다. 장인의 시간이 깃든 형태들은 고요히 일상에 닿아, 흐름 속에서도 머무름의 깊이를 전한다. 

공예는 삶을 담는 그릇이다. 수곡 손대현은 60년에 걸쳐 정제된 시간으로 쌓아왔다. 손끝에서 빚어진 시간은 공간을 넘어, 오늘의 삶 속으로 스며든다. 그 시간이 길어 올린 깊이를 일상에서 마주하는 순간이 되길 바란다.

Master artisan Daehyun Sohn was captivated by the beauty of najeon (mother-of-pearl inlay) at the age of fifteen, which led him to begin his lifelong journey into the art of lacquer. For over sixty years, he has repeated the process of applying, drying, and polishing lacquer—layer upon layer. Within these accumulated layers lies invisible, condensed time, and in the subtle textures, a sense of density formed through years of disciplined practice and refined aesthetics. Sohn’s sculptural language, which began with the act of building from within, has over time become a concentrated expression of spiritual depth, reaching beyond what is seen.

Sohn has long contemplated how to remain faithful to tradition while engaging with the present. As he states, “I preserve the old in materials, techniques, and process—but the finished object must speak to this era.” His work holds fast to the deep roots of lacquer and najeon, while always pursuing a mode of expression that breathes with contemporary sensibility.

The exhibition Abide, 머무는 형태 centers on moon jars, bowls, furniture, and everyday objects, proposing how traditional craft can “abide” — that is, how it can dwell and breathe within the rhythms of contemporary daily life. Craft is not merely a physical object; it is a structure that absorbs time and accumulates sensibility, gently permeating life itself. Forms imbued with the artisan’s long years of practice quietly settle into the everyday, conveying a stillness that persists even amid movement.

Craft is a vessel for life. Over sixty years, Sugok Sohn Daehyun has layered time into his work with refined precision. The time shaped at his fingertips extends beyond the studio, flowing into the present moment. We hope this exhibition offers a chance to encounter the depth that time has patiently brought forth, here, in the course of everyday life.
