사색종이가방 : 온화한 멈춤

신혜선 작가는 감각의 속도를 늦춘 ‘멈춤’ 상태에서 비로소 발현되는 지각의 층위를 탐구한다. ‘멈춤’은 단순한 물리적 정지가 아니다. 관습적 시각의 속도를 늦춰 대상을 깊게 마주하는 응시의 과정이자, 침묵을 매개로 내면의 사유를 길어 올리는 수행적 태도다.

전시는 색면에 놓인 ‘사색종이가방’이라는 간결한 형상을 중심으로 전개된다. 사색종이가방은 관람객과 호흡하며 사유가 들고 나는 열린 형식이자, 상호 작용으로 발생하는 미묘한 떨림을 증폭시키는 시공간의 공명장치다. 재현을 넘어 층위의 변주, 세라믹 오브제의 물리적 개입을 통해 공간의 차원을 넓힌다. 특히 수십 개의 캔버스를 정교하게 직조한 집합적 구성은 개별 작품이 지닌 고유한 깊이를 유지하면서도, 각 작품이 품은 내밀한 호흡을 선형적 리듬으로 확장한다. 형상들은 독립적으로 머무르기도, 서로의 여백 속에서 유기적 관계를 형성하기도 하며 새로운 서사를 구축한다.

얇게 겹쳐 쌓은 색면 회화는 흔적이 남지 않을 정도로 섬세하게 포개어져 시간의 축적을 드러낸다. 부드러운 미색의 공기감이 감도는 화면 위에서 시선은 층위 사이를 천천히 유영하며 잔잔한 맥락을 감지한다. 중첩된 색면은 명확히 규정되지 않은 모호한 상태를 유지함으로써 지각이 생성되는 깊이를 형성한다. 회화의 틀을 깨고 개입한 세라믹 오브제는 시간과 빛의 흐름에 따라 변화하는 동적 풍경을 제시하며 다각적 감응을 선사한다.

작가는 자신의 작업을 ‘무미(無味)의 회화’라 명명한다. 무(無)는 결여(缺如)가 아닌 맑은 담(淡)의 상태다. 즉, 특정한 의미나 감각으로 수렴되지 않은 채 열려 있으며, 비어 있음으로의 결핍이 아닌 관계와 가능성이 끊임없이 발생하는 지점이다. 의도적 비움으로 구축된 흐릿한 조형언어는 고정된 답을 제시하기보다 무한한 가능성으로 머문다. 특정한 해석을 강요하기보다 감각이 온화하게 머물 자리를 내어주며, 각자의 생각을 투사할 수 있는 지각의 공간을 완성한다.

이 전시는 분주한 일상의 소음을 잠시 소거하고 걸음을 멈춰, 사유에 깊게 닿을 수 있는 사색의 시간을 제공한다. 각자의 사색가방에 온화한 평온을 담아가기를 기대한다. 

Shin Hyesun explores layers of perception that emerge in a state of “pause,” where the speed of sensation is deliberately slowed. This pause is not merely a physical stop, but a sustained mode of attention—an act of engaging the object with depth, and a contemplative stance that draws out inner thought through silence.

The exhibition unfolds around the simplified form of the “PaperBag of Thought,” set upon fields of color. The PaperBag operates as an open structure in which thought moves in and out in resonance with the viewer, functioning as a spatiotemporal resonant device that amplifies the subtle tremors generated through interaction. Moving beyond representation, the work expands spatial dimensions through variations of pictorial layering and the material intervention of ceramic objects. A meticulously composed configuration of dozens of canvases preserves the distinct depth of each work while extending their intimate rhythms into a linear cadence. The forms remain autonomous yet enter into organic relationships within shared intervals, constructing new narratives.

The paintings are built through thinly accumulated layers so delicately superimposed that they leave almost no visible trace, revealing a quiet accumulation of time. Within the softly suffused, pale-toned surface, the gaze drifts slowly across strata, sensing a subtle continuity. These layered planes sustain an indeterminate condition that resists clear definition, forming a depth in which perception is generated. Ceramic objects, intervening beyond the pictorial frame, present a dynamic field that shifts with the flow of time and light, offering a range of sensory responses.

The artist describes her practice as a “painting of flavorlessness” (mumi, 無味). Here, “non-being” does not signify lack or absence, but a state of clarity and restraint. It remains open without converging into a fixed meaning or sensation, not as a deficiency of emptiness but as a site where relationships and possibilities continually arise. The deliberately emptied, diffuse visual language does not impose a singular interpretation but sustains a condition of openness. Rather than directing meaning, it offers a space in which perception can gently dwell, allowing each viewer to project their own thoughts and complete the perceptual space.

This exhibition momentarily suspends the noise of everyday life, inviting viewers to pause and reach a deeper register of thought. It offers a contemplative interval in which one may carry away a sense of quiet repose within one’s own PaperBag of Thought.
