제이영 작가는 자연과 함께한 어린시절의 영향으로 돌과 흙, 나뭇가지에서 작품의 영감을 얻는다. 어릴 적 작가의 집 주변을 두르고 있는 담벼락은 인간의 문명이자 삶처럼 보이기도 했고 흙과 돌, 자연 그 자체이기도 했다. 인간은 자연으로부터 떨어질 수 없음을 담벼락이 온몸으로 말하고 있는 것 같다. 이것이 제이영 작가가 우연의 흔적에 대한 탐구와 함께 담벼락을 형상화한 Moment 작품에 집중하는 이유이다.

거대한 자연과 인간의 삶을 한 화면에 담은 'Like-150mm' 작품들은 제이영 작가가 언제나 갖고 있는 사유의 흔적이다. 원의 형상은 제이영 작가의 작품에서 거대한 자연을 상징합니다. 자연과 인간의 대비, 그러나 뗄수 없는 관계에 대한 고민의 흔적을 작품으로 남긴 'Like-150mm' 작품에서 우리는 '원'을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 그와 대조되는 '선'은 철사를 종이 뒤에서 눌러 찍어낸 형상으로 작가가 의도한 것이면서 의도와는 달리 얻어진 우연의 흔적이기도 하다. 이것은 마치 인간이 살아내고 있는 삶과 닮았다. 우리는 선택의 연속으로 생을 이어가지만 우리의 의도와는 다르게 결과가 나오기도 하고, 예상치 못한 방향으로 삶이 흘러가기도 한다. 철사를 종이 뒤에서 찍는 방법은 작가의 의도이지만 철사가 어느 부분에서 종이를 찢을지, 찢지 않고 의도대로 고스란히 찍힐 지는 아무도 예측할 수 없다는 점에서 인간의 삶과 닮았다.

어느새 2021년을 두 달 남짓 남긴 가을의 문턱에서 제이영 작가의 작품을 만나보자. 숨가쁘게 달려온 하루를 잠시 내려놓고 우리가 가진 시간에 대해 생각하는 여유를 가지게 될 것이다.

Artist J Young gains inspiration from pebbles, soil, and branches around him, as his childhood cannot be told without nature. As a child, stone fences surrounding the artist’s house were seen as human civilization but as well as the nature itself. The fence was alluding to him that humans cannot be separated from nature. Therefore, artist J Young focuses on ‘moment’ series which embodies shapes of fences and search for coincidence.

　‘Like-150mm’ which gathered enormous nature and human life on a canvas, is a trace of rational thoughts of Young. In the artwork which illustrates the contrast between the nature and human, however, inseparable relationship of two subjects, viewers may notice numerous circles. In contrast, line, resulted from a wire pressed from behind a piece of paper, is intended by the artist to be a line, however, the shape of the line is a trace of coincidence obtained contrary to his intention. And such technique is like the life which we are living in. We continue our lives in a series of choices, but results are sometimes against our intentions, and flow in unexpected directions. The method of pressing down the wire from behind the canvas is the artist’s intention, however, where the wire will tear the canvas or whether it will be pressed as intended without tearing it are all depending on coincidence, resembling our lives.
