욕망은 여러 형태로 인간을 유혹한다. 거부하기 힘든 돈이나 권력의 회오리로 우리를 끌어들이기도 하고, 명예나 사랑의 이름으로 손짓하기도 한다. 그 결과는 인간의 삶을 고양하기도 하지만, 심각한 도덕적 타락과 범죄의 나락으로 떨어뜨리기도 한다. 그만큼 욕망은 인간과 밀접한 존재이자 부정할 수 없는 인간의 속성이라고 할 수 있다.

그래서인지 많은 예술과 문학은 오래 전부터 욕망을 다뤄왔다. 지금 이 전시장에 소개되고 있는 두 작가도 마찬가지다. 마요네즈와 토마토 캐첩 튜브에서 연상된 캐릭터 'Mayo'와 'Mato'로 사람과 사람 사이에서 드러나는 욕망을 은유하는 최나리 작가, 현대인의 물질적 욕망을 풍자적으로 표현하지만 그것마저 행복한 삶의 한 부분이라는 생각으로 '행복한 돼지'를 그려내는 한상윤 작가. 두 사람 역시 욕망을 주제로 작품을 이어간다.

 

 

최나리 작가는 마요와 마토를 남성과 여성이라는 상징적 코드로 전환하여 작품에 이야기를 담는다. 인간의 잘못된 욕망과 욕구를 폭로하거나 타자에 대한 호기심, 인간의 내면을 표현한다. 그러나 밝고 명랑한 색채와 깜찍한 도상으로 가득한 화면은 보는 이로 하여금 즐겁고 익살스런 기분을 느끼게 하여 작가가 드러내고자 하는 의미를 한층 감추고 있다. 

 

한상윤 작가는 인간의 욕망 자체를 상징하는 인물을 돼지로 표현하여 물질의 풍요에도 욕심을 버리지 못하는 현대인을 풍자했다. 그러다 문득 욕심을 부리는 모습조차 행복하고 싶은 마음의 표현이라는 생각이 든 뒤로 작가는 행복한 돼지를 그리게 됐다. 화려한 금박과 은박 사이로 활짝 웃고 있는 돼지의 모습은 더 나은 삶, 행복한 하루를 보내고자 하는 이 시대 모든 이의 얼굴을 닮았다. 

두 작가의 작품을 통해 인간의 욕망을 다시 생각한다면 욕망은 어쩌면 치열한 현대를 살아가는 이의 열정과 간절함의 원동력이라 할 수 있다. 그러므로 욕망을 터부시하고 감추어야 할 대상으로 보기보다 적당한 힘의 원천이 될 수 있도록 삶 가까이에 두어 조절 가능한 대상으로 삼는 지혜가 필요할 것이다.

Desire attracts humans in numerous forms. It attracts us with money or power that is hard to deny, and it beckons in the name of honor or love. The results may enhance human life, but also results serious moral degradation and the abyss of crime. As such, desire can be said to be a close existence to humans and an undeniable attribute of humans.

Perhaps that is why many arts and literature have long dealt with the topic of desire. The same is true of the two artists who are now being introduced in this exhibition. Nari Choi, who metaphorically expresses the desire revealed between people with the characters "Mayo" and "Mato" reminiscent of mayonnaise and tomato ketchup tubes, and Sang-yoon Han, who portrays "Happy Pig" with the idea that it is a part of a happy life continue their work on the theme of desire.

Artist Choi converts Mayo and Mato into symbolic codes of men and women and tells a story in her work. It reveals human's false desires, expresses curiosity about others, and human inner self. However, the canvas, full of bright, cheerful colors and adorable images, makes audiences feel pleasant and humorous, further concealing the meaning that the artist wants to reveal.

Han Sang-yoon satirized modern people who could not give up their greed even in the richness of matter by expressing a character symbolizing human desire itself as a pig. Then, after suddenly when artist Han thought that even the appearance of greed was an expression of heart to be happy, the Han began to draw a happy pig. The appearance of a pig smiling widely between colorful gold and silver foil resembles the face of everyone in this era who wants to have a better life and a happy day.

If human desire is reconsidered through the works of the two artists, desire can be said to be the driving force of the passion and desperation of those living in the fierce modern era. Therefore, it will be necessary to have the wisdom to put desire close to life and make it an adjustable object so that it can be a suitable source of power rather than an object to be burst and hidden.
