바야흐로 만물이 꽃피고 싹이 돋아나는 봄의 계절, 헤드비갤러리는 자연을 작품에 담아 저마다의 메시지를 전하는 남성 작가 세 명을 한 자리에 모았다.

강동현 작가는 그가 보거나 느낀 관계를 ‘공존의 숲’이라는 주제로 작품활동을 이어간다. 그러므로 ‘공존의 숲’은 작가가 바라본 관계에 대한 관조의 대상이다.

나무가 모여 만들어진 숲에는 그로 인해 생겨난 다양한 생명이 공존한다. 물에서 시작된 생명은 끝없는 변화를 시도한다. 생명이 모여 생명을 만들고 이 현상은 또 다른 생명과 살아간다. 그래서 생명은 끊임없이 이어지고 여러 모습으로 인간과 공존한다.

스테인리스 스틸 봉을 용접하여 그물망처럼 만든 공간과 그것으로 빚어진 형상은 비어있음과 형상이 공존하고 안과 밖의 경계가 모호해진다. 이러한 각 동물의 형상은 종 특유의 모습을 갖춘 자체 응집성을 가짐과 동시에 환경의 일부가 된다. 숲을 품은 동물의 형태는 은신과 보호의 이미지를 지닌다. 우리가 먹는 것이 우리가 되듯 동물도 자연계에서 먼저 자리를 잡고 지상의 모든 생명을 가능하게 한 식물을 자신의 내부에 품는다.

작가 손정기의 작품은 광활한 자연과 그 속에 홀로 서 있는 아주 작은 인간의 모습을 특징으로 한다. 작품 속 인간은 어딘가를 향해 걷고 있으며 고개를 숙이고 있고 때론 저 멀리 있는 수평선을 바라보기도 한다. 바람 소리만 들릴 것 같은 적막한 풍경. 눈으로 뒤덮여 흰 숲의 풍경은 입김이 나올 듯 시리고 차갑다. 흰색과 검정색, 회색으로 단조롭게 구성한 풍경이지만 흑백의 대비와 반복되는 조형요소의 조화로 손정기 작가의 작품은 볼때마다 다른 모습을 찾을 만큼 풍부하다. 공통점을 구하자면 작품을 볼 때 마다 느낄 수 있는 고요하고 외로운 기분이다.

‘어떻게 살아가야 하는가’에 대한 고찰이 삶에서 가장 중요한 요소라 생각하는 작가는 그 고찰이 내면의 탐구를 통해 이루어진다고 말한다. 내면으로 침전하기 위해서는 자발적 침묵과 고독, 즉 명상과 사색의 시간이 필요하므로 작가는 작품을 보는 이의 고독을 자극하여 그 내면으로 떠나는 여정의 시작으로 작품이 역할하기를 원한다. 작품 속 고독과 침묵으로 자기 안의 쓸쓸함을 마주하며 개인의 삶에 한 발 다가가길 빈다.

작가 태우는 "臥遊 ; 와유" 사상을 통해 현대의 산수와 정물을 표현하는 작업을 한다. "臥遊 ; 와유" 사상이란, ‘臥 누울 와’ 와 ‘遊 놀 유’ , 즉 '누워서 유람하다.' 는 뜻을 가진 중국 남북조시대의 최초 산수화가이자 이론가인 '종병'의 사상을 일컫는다. 작가는 와유사상 속의 정신적인 해방을 즐거움이라고 생각했고 臥遊[와유]사상을 바탕으로 정신적 즐거움을 현대적으로 해석하여 작가 특유의 유쾌함으로 풀어내어 작품에 해학( ;諧謔) 을 담는다.

태우 작가의 작품에 자주 등장하는 도상은 작가가 사랑하는 인물을 비유한 것이다. ‘눕새’는 작가의 아내를, ‘호랑이’는 작가 자신을 상징한다. 천진난만한 표정으로 누워있는 눕새의 꽃밭 풍경으로 관객은 작가가 생각하는 와유 사상이 실현되면 어떤 모습일지를 상상할 수 있다. 집 안에 누워 그림을 그리고 즐기는 그의 작품 철학은 작품 바깥으로도 뿜어져 나와 보는 이의 마음도 행복하게 만든다.

자연을 소재로 작업을 이어가지만 서로 다른 메시지를 표현하는 세 작가의 작품은 헤드비갤러리에서 5월 21일까지 관람할 수 있다.

Frozen ice has turned into a life-nurturing stream and flower blooming and mono-green season has turned its corner. Now, spring is just around the corner, hedwig-gallery Gallery gathered three artists who deliver their messages through pristine nature.

The first artist, Kang Dong-hyun continues his work under the theme of "Forest of Coexistence" in the relationship he saw or felt. Therefore, 'Forest of Coexistence' is the subject of observation about the relationship which the artist had witnessed.

Trees gather around and form a forest; within the forest, various lives such as animals, insects, and more, coexist. Lives which began in water continuously develop. Again, they gather to create other lives, and therefore, those lives are repeated endlessly while changing their forms and coexisting with humans.

Artist Kang creates space via a tree-like shape using welding stainless steel; such design attempts to collapse the boundary between inside and outside with an ambiguity of an empty but filled state. The resulting animal shapes have their cohesiveness with a species-specific shape while becoming a part of the environment. Moreover, the shapes of animals which embraces the forest are implying concealment and protection; to be specific, just as what we consume become part of us, animals embrace nature which enabled all life on the Earth, within themselves.

The second artist, Son Jeong-ki's work features vast nature and a tiny human figure standing alone in it. The human being in the painting lowers his head or sometimes looks at the horizon in the distance and walks toward an unknown place.

The scenery of the white forest, looking desolate, is giving a hearing of the sound of the wind. Although the landscape is monotonously composed of white, black, and gray, Son’s works are very vibrant resulting from the combination of black and white contrast with repeated formative elements; such technique allowed different appearances when looked at multiple times.

            The artist, Son, thinks that the consideration of "how to live" is the most important factor in life; therefore, his works are conveying the consideration made through inner exploration. The artist wants the work to act a role as the beginning of the journey to the inside by stimulating the loneliness of the viewer since meditation and contemplation are needed to settle in a concealed inner side.

The third artist, Taewoo works on expressing modern arithmetic and still life through the idea raised by Zong Bing, “Wayu,” or “to lie down and cruise.” The artist considered mental liberation as pleasure, and therefore, based on “Wayu,” he interpreted mental pleasure in a modern way and expressed it with the artist's unique pleasure, and humor in the work.

            The iconography which appears in the artist’s works is a metaphor for the people who Taewoo favors. "Lying Bird" symbolizes his wife, and "Tiger" implies himself. “Lying bird” with an innocent expression, resting in the flower garden, presents the audience with an image of what the world would look like if the idea of “Wayu” was realized.

The works of three artists who deliver their unique messages through pristine nature will be available for exhibition until May 21st at hedwig-gallery Gallery.
