《Still, Wave and Again》은 고요함 속에서 다시 피어나는 생명력의 흐름과, 반복되는 행위 속에서 내면을 비워내는 예술적 사유의 여정을 담은 전시다. 김순철과 김근배, 두 작가는 서로 다른 재료와 조형 언어로 삶의 순환성과 감정의 깊이를 포착하며, 고요하지만 끊임없이 파동치는 시간의 결을 조형화한다.

김근배 작가에게 창작의 출발점은 드넓은 평야와 유년 시절 자주 드나들었던 정미소다. 이 장소는 작가에게 단순한 기억을 넘어, 상상력과 조형적 영감을 불러일으키는 호기심의 장소로 작용했다. 작가는 정미소라는 공간에서의 경험과 인상을 바탕으로, 금속 조각 안에 동심, 낭만, 그리고 생명력을 불어넣는다.

청동을 절단하고 분절된 동선을 용접하는 수십 번의 공정을 거쳐 구축되는 그의 조각은, 유년 시절의 추억과 삶의 단면들이 응축된 조형적 풍경이다. 고목, 로봇, 책장, 테이블 같은 오브제들은 현실과 환상이 교차하는 장소에 존재하며, 작가 특유의 동심과 상상력이 결합된 세계관을 입체적으로 드러낸다. 죽은 듯 보이지만 생명력을 되찾는 고목의 이미지처럼, 그의 작업 역시 순환과 재생의 상징으로 기능한다. 초현실적인 형상과 낭만적인 상상력이 결합된 조형 언어는 작가 자신뿐 아니라, 현대인의 삶을 반영하는 은유이자 우화로 작동한다.

김순철 작가의 대표 연작 'About Wish'는 한지 위에 바느질과 그림을 병치한 오브제 작업으로, 인내의 시간 속에서 피어난 감정과 기억, 바람을 시각화한다. 실로 꿰어진 선은 동양화의 선(線) 개념을 확장한 조형 언어이며, 한 땀 한 땀 이어지는 바느질은 자기 성찰과 사유, 그리고 시간의 축적을 상징한다.

작가는 바느질이라는 반복적 행위를 통해 일상의 감정과 기억을 천천히 되짚는다. 앞면과 뒷면을 아우르는 이 꿰매는 행위는 나와 내면의 또 다른 나, 혹은 타자와의 관계를 연결하는 감성적 장치로 기능한다. 실을 따라 형성된 입체감은 빛과 시점에 따라 다채롭게 변화하며, 관습적인 오브제의 의미를 비우고 새롭게 환기시킨다. 이는 마치 복잡함을 덜어낸 항아리처럼, 명료한 의식과 고요한 감각에 도달하고자 하는 작가의 바람을 품는다.

《Still, Wave and Again》은 멈춰 있는 듯 보이지만 흐르고, 사라진 듯 보이지만 다시 피어나는 삶의 형상에 대한 이야기다. 두 작가는 각자의 방식으로 시간과 고요, 내면과 외부, 인내와 낭만을 시각화하며, 우리로 하여금 자신을 돌아보게 하는 조용하고도 깊은 예술적 장면을 만들어낸다.

Still, Wave and Again is an exhibition that explores the resurgence of vitality through stillness and the contemplative journey of emptying the self through repetition. Artists Soonchul Kim and Geunbae Kim each capture the cyclical nature of life and the emotional depth of existence through distinct materials and sculptural languages—shaping the quiet yet ever-pulsing rhythm of time.

For Geunbae Kim, the starting point of creation lies in the vast plains and the old rice mill he frequented during his childhood. This place, more than just a memory, became a site of curiosity that sparked imagination and sculptural inspiration. Drawing from his experiences and impressions of this space, the artist breathes childlike wonder, romance, and vitality into his metal sculptures.

His works are built through dozens of processes involving cutting bronze and welding segmented copper wires—forming sculptural landscapes that encapsulate fragments of childhood memories and slices of life. Objects such as ancient trees, robots, bookshelves, and tables exist in a space where reality and fantasy intersect, giving three-dimensional form to the artist’s unique worldview infused with innocence and imagination. Like the image of an old tree that seems dead yet regains life, his works function as symbols of regeneration and cyclical renewal. The surreal forms and romantic imagination embedded in his sculptures serve as metaphors and allegories not only of the artist’s own journey but also of the broader human experience.

Soonchul Kim’s signature series About Wish features objects where hand-sewn stitches and paintings coexist on traditional Korean paper (hanji), visualizing emotions, memories, and desires born from patient time. The stitched lines extend the traditional concept of line in East Asian painting, while the act of sewing—repetitive and meditative—symbolizes self-reflection, contemplation, and the accumulation of time.

Through sewing, the artist slowly retraces the emotions and memories of daily life. The act of stitching across both front and back becomes a poetic device that connects the self with the inner self—or with the other. The tactile dimension formed by thread changes subtly with light and perspective, stripping conventional objects of their usual meanings and breathing new significance into them. Like a jar freed from complexity, these works carry the artist’s quiet longing for clarity of consciousness and serene awareness.

Still, Wave and Again speaks to the forms of life that seem still but are in motion, that appear to vanish yet bloom again. Through their respective practices, the two artists give visual shape to time and stillness, the inner and the outer, patience and reverie—creating quietly powerful scenes that invite us to pause and reflect on ourselves.
