멀리서 보면, 기하학적인 공간 속에 하나의 점이 있다. 그러나 그 점에 다가설수록, 우리는 어느 순간 자연 속, 혹은 자연이 반영된 풍경 속에 홀로 서 있는 한 사람을 마주하게 된다. 그리고 그 인물은 결국, 나 자신이다. 이번 전시에서 손정기 작가가 조명하는 ‘고독’은, 타인의 부재로 인한 결핍이 아니라, 스스로 선택한 고요한 시간이다. 도시의 소음을 벗어나 걷고 또 걷다 보면, 어느새 호수 앞, 숲속, 길 한가운데에 혼자 선 자신의 모습을 발견하게 된다. 그리고 그 순간, “문득, 난 여기 혼자”라는 직관적 깨달음이 찾아온다.

작가는 이 자발적 고독의 시간이 결코 고립이 아닌, 자신과 삶에 대한 사유의 시간이라고 말한다. 바람조차 잠든 인적 드문 호숫가에서, 물에 비친 낯선 얼굴을 마주하고, 하늘이 발밑에 위치한 풍경 앞에 설 때, 우리는 기존의 시선으로는 보지 못했던 세계와 나를 발견하게 된다. 목적과 효율을 내려놓고 비로소 마주하는 이 낯선 풍경은, 삶의 짐을 내려놓는 첫 번째 장면이 된다.

손정기의 회화는 풍경에 대한 묘사를 넘어, 내면의 심연에 이르는 길을 보여준다. 익숙한 것이 낯설게 다가오고, 원하던 것이 더 이상 나를 만족시키지 않으며, 진정한 나와 되고 싶은 나 사이에서 당황과 실망을 경험하는 감정은, 결국 ‘나’를 알기 위한 통과의례와도 같다. 작가는 이러한 내면의 충돌을 회피하지 않고 응시하며, 고요한 화면 속에 정제된 고독의 정서를 담아낸다.

《문득, 난 여기 혼자》는 단순히 ‘혼자 있음’의 정서를 나열하는 전시가 아니다. 이는 삶의 본질을 마주하는 성찰의 시간이며, 자발적 고독을 통해 무거운 짐을 덜어내기는 여정이다. 이 전시가 오늘을 살아가는 우리 모두에게, 내면을 잠시 들여다보게 하는 조용한 제안이 되기를 바란다.

From afar, one sees a solitary dot within a geometric space. Yet as one approaches, that dot gradually transforms—revealing a lone figure standing amidst nature, or in a landscape where nature is reflected. And that figure, ultimately, is oneself. In this exhibition, artist Jeongki Son sheds light on “solitude” not as a void born from the absence of others, but as a stillness deliberately chosen. As we walk, escaping the noise of the city, we eventually find ourselves alone—by a lake, in a forest, or in the middle of a road. And in that moment, comes the quiet realization: “Suddenly, I’m here, alone.”

The artist describes this voluntary solitude not as isolation, but as a time for deep contemplation on the self and on life. Standing by a desolate lake where even the wind has stilled, confronting a reflection that feels unfamiliar, or facing a scene where the sky seems to lie beneath our feet—we encounter a version of the world, and of ourselves, previously unseen. This unfamiliar landscape, experienced only when one surrenders goals and productivity, marks the beginning of laying down life’s burdens.

Jeongki Son’s paintings go beyond depicting landscapes; they trace a path into the depths of the inner self. The familiar becomes strange, what once fulfilled no longer satisfies, and one is caught between who they are and who they long to be—experiencing confusion and disappointment. Yet these emotions become a rite of passage toward true self-understanding. Rather than turn away, the artist gazes directly into this inner conflict, capturing a distilled sense of solitude in his tranquil compositions.

Suddenly, I’m Here Alone is not merely a presentation of what it means to be alone. It is a reflective journey into the essence of life—a process of lightening the load through self-chosen solitude. May this exhibition offer a quiet invitation to all who live in the present moment, encouraging us to pause, and look within.
