Stefan Bircheneder(스테판 비르헤네더)는 고전 회화 테크닉을 기반으로 조형성과 개념을 확장해온 독일 작가다. 성당 복원화가로 일하며 역사적 회화 기술을 익힌 작가는 바로크 회화의 양식을 현대적으로 재구성하며 독자적인 회화 세계를 구축한다. 대리석, 금박 등 특수한 재료를 사용해 화려함과 상징성이 두드러지는 회화적 장면을 구성하는 동시에, 버려진 공장이나 낡은 캐비닛, 산업적 풍경 위에 이를 중첩시, ‘바로크 판타지’의 미감과 현대 산업 사회의 구조적 아이러니를 얹는다.

트롱프뢰유(Trompe l’oeil) 기법을 통해 언뜻 보면 현실처럼 착각될 만큼 정교하게 표현되며, 정적이고 비어 있는 공간은 오히려 극적인 긴장감을 자아낸다. 그러나 작품 속 캐비닛을 열었을 때 마주하는 거칠고 노출된 캔버스 뒷면이나 선반 위에 올려진 극사실적 정물은 시선을 멈추게 하며, 우리가 ‘현실’이라 인식하는 장면에 질문을 던진다. 시각적 착시를 유도하며 동시에 착시를 해체하는 이중적 장치를 통해 현실과 환상의 경계를 유영한다. 또한 전통적인 회화에 현대적 사물성을 접목하며, 작업복·공구·녹슨 철재 사물함 등 비예술적 오브제를 재구성해 ‘예술과 노동’이라는 이질적 개념의 접점을 탐색하고 확장된 시각 언어를 제안한다. 회화는 단순한 시각 예술을 넘어, 사회적 기억과 물질적 흔적, 그리고 예술과 사회가 교차하는 지점에서 확장된 서사를 드러낸다.

Stefan Bircheneder는 일상의 익숙한 장면을 낯설게 전환 시키는 시각적 재편을 통해 유머와 해학, 철학적 직관이 공존하는 시선을 제시한다. 이러한 작업은 단지 보이는 것에서 멈추지 않고, 읽히고 해석되며 확장되는 이미지의 가능성을 보여준다. 이를 통해 현대 회화가 지닌 내러티브의 확장 가능성을 묻는다.

Stefan Bircheneder is a German artist who has expanded form and concept based on classical painting techniques. Having worked as a cathedral restoration painter, he mastered historical painting skills and reconstructs the style of Baroque painting in a contemporary way, establishing a unique world of painting. By using special materials such as marble and gold leaf, he creates painterly scenes marked by opulence and symbolism, while layering them over abandoned factories, worn-out cabinets, and industrial landscapes—combining the aesthetics of “Baroque fantasy” with the structural irony of modern industrial society.

Using the trompe l’oeil technique, his works are rendered with such precision that they can be mistaken for reality at first glance. These static and empty spaces, paradoxically, evoke a sense of dramatic tension. However, the rough and exposed back of a canvas revealed through an open cabinet, or hyperrealistic still lifes placed on shelves, arrest the viewer’s gaze and raise questions about the scenes we perceive as “reality.” By inducing visual illusion and simultaneously dismantling it, he navigates the boundary between reality and fantasy. Furthermore, by incorporating modern materiality into traditional painting, he reconfigures non-artistic objects—such as work uniforms, tools, and rusted metal lockers—exploring the intersection between the seemingly opposing concepts of “art and labor” and proposing an expanded visual language. His paintings transcend mere visual art to reveal extended narratives rooted in social memory, material traces, and the intersection of art and society.

Stefan Bircheneder presents a perspective where humor, satire, and philosophical intuition coexist through a visual reconfiguration that defamiliarizes familiar scenes from everyday life. His work does not stop at what is seen, but invites reading, interpretation, and expansion—demonstrating the potential of images to go beyond their surface. In doing so, he questions the narrative possibilities that contemporary painting can hold.
