홍승태 개인전

홍승태 작가는 조형과 평면, 회화와 설치, 그리고 팝 아트의 언어를 넘나들며 독창적인 조형 세계를 구축한다. 작가는 현대사회의 물질적 욕망과 개인의 이상을 회화적 장치로 시각화하며, 이를 ‘하이퍼 팝 아트(Hyper Pop Art)’라는 자신만의 새로운 장르로 정립했다. 작업은 팝 아트가 가진 대중성과 유희성을 기반으로 하되, 보다 서사적이고 자전적인 욕망의 서사를 담아 낸다. 현대인이 품고 있는 성공과 결핍, 자아에 대한 갈망을 시각적으로 풀어낸 작품 속에는, 누구나 공감할 수 있는 동시대적 감정과 과장된 형태의 유머가 공존한다.

이번 전시에 선보이는 버킷리스트(Bucket List) 시리즈는 뉴욕, 에비로드, 구겐하임 등 작가가 상상하는 ‘이루고 싶은 장면들’을 작품으로 구현한 작업이다. 높이 솟은 빌딩과 화려한 배경 속에서 욕망은 단지 부정적인 것이 아니라, 삶의 동력이자 정체성을 구성하는 요소로 표현된다. 하이퍼리얼리즘 기반의 작업을 오랜 시간 이어온 홍승태는 2016년을 기점으로 전환을 시도했으며, 그 결과물이 바로 지금의 ‘하이퍼 팝 아트’다. 작가는 “팝 아트의 아이콘이 앤디 워홀이라면, 하이퍼 팝 아트는 홍승태로 기억되길 바란다”고 말한다.

이번 전시는 대중성과 실험성, 진지함과 유머가 어우러진 조형 언어를 통해 동시대 회화의 또 다른 가능성을 제시한다.

Artist Seungtae Hong constructs a unique sculptural world that traverses the boundaries between sculpture and painting, installation and pop art. He visualizes the material desires of modern society and the ideals of the individual through painterly devices, establishing a new genre he calls “Hyper Pop Art.” While grounded in the accessibility and playfulness of traditional pop art, his work embraces a more narrative and autobiographical exploration of desire. His pieces reflect contemporary emotions that resonate universally—desires for success, identity, and fulfillment—infused with humor through exaggerated forms.

The Bucket List series presented in this exhibition depicts imagined “scenes to achieve,” including landmarks such as New York, Abbey Road, and the Guggenheim Museum. Set against dazzling backgrounds and towering buildings, desire is not portrayed as a negative force but rather as a vital drive and a key element of self-identity. Having long worked in a hyperrealistic style, Seungtae Hong shifted direction in 2016, leading to the creation of what he now defines as “Hyper Pop Art.” As the artist states, “If Andy Warhol is the icon of Pop Art, I hope to be remembered as the icon of Hyper Pop Art.”

This exhibition offers a new perspective on contemporary painting by merging popularity with experimentation, and seriousness with humor, through Hong’s distinct sculptural language.
