강지연 작가는 ‘욕망’이라는 인간 내면의 원초적 동기를 작업의 중심 모티브로 삼아, 현실과 이상의 충돌 속에서 살아가는 인간의 정체성을 조형적으로 탐구해왔다.

강지의 작업은 단순한 재현이나 장식성을 넘어, 사회적 기준과 이상화된 아름다움, 여성성에 대한 시선, 그리고 소비 사회 속에서 끊임없이 부추겨지는 갈망의 심리를 조형적으로 드러낸다. 각기 다른 소재를 시리즈별로 전개하면서도, 작품마다 관통하는 질문은 동일하다. 인간은 왜, 무엇을, 어떻게 욕망하는가?

‘Desire’ 시리즈에서 등장하는 자개는 단순한 장식이 아닌, 욕망의 이면을 상징하는 장치이다. 자개의 영롱한 반짝임은 한편으론 미(美)의 추구를, 또 다른 한편으론 이상을 향한 비상(飛上)의 열망을 상징한다. 자개 장식으로 치장된 여성의 육체는 찬란하게 빛나지만, 그 안에는 도달 불가능한 욕망과 현실 사이의 간극이 숨어 있다.

현대 사회에서 욕망은 점점 더 시각화되고, 소비 가능하며, 비교 가능한 대상으로 변해간다. 강지연의 작품은 그러한 욕망의 형태를 미적 언어로 번역하며, 관람자에게 되묻는다. 욕망은 어디에서 비롯되며, 그것은 과연 충족될 수 있는가?

찬란히 빛나는 욕망의 외피를 따라 걷다 보면, 그 안에 숨겨진 불안과 결핍, 그리고 인간 존재의 민낯과 마주하게 된다.

Artist Jiyeon Kang places desire — a primal human drive — at the core of her artistic exploration, sculpturally examining identity as it is shaped by the clash between reality and idealism.

Kang’s work goes beyond mere representation or ornamentation. It visually reveals the psychological tensions driven by societal standards, idealized beauty, perspectives on femininity, and the constant stimulation of longing within a consumerist culture. While each series unfolds through different materials, a single question persists throughout her work: Why do we desire, what do we desire, and how do we desire?

In her Desire series, mother-of-pearl is not simply decorative — it becomes a symbolic device for the hidden layers of longing. Its iridescent shimmer signifies both the pursuit of beauty and the yearning to transcend toward an ideal. The female body adorned with mother-of-pearl glows radiantly, yet beneath the surface lies a tension between unreachable ideals and lived reality.

In contemporary society, desire is increasingly visualized, commodified, and rendered comparable. Jiyeon Kang translates these forms of desire into a language of aesthetics, prompting viewers to question: Where does desire originate — and can it ever truly be fulfilled?

As one follows the luminous surface of desire, they are inevitably led to confront the underlying anxieties, absences, and the raw essence of human existence.
