제이 영 개인전

제이  영 작가는 자연과 함께한 유년기의 기억을 토대로, 흙과 돌, 나뭇가지 등 일상의 물질에서 조형의 단서를 발견한다. 그의 작업에 반복적으로 등장하는 ‘담벼락’은 자연과 문명의 경계이자 공존의 상징으로 기능하며, 인간이 자연으로부터 결코 분리될 수 없다는 본질적인 메시지를 내포한다. 이러한 사유는 작가가 지속적으로 탐구해 온 우연의 흔적과 맞물리며, ‘Moment’ 시리즈로 구체화된다. 담을 구성하는 재료의 물성, 그 위에 쌓이는 시간과 흔적은 곧 인간의 삶과 닮아 있다.

‘Like-150mm’ 연작에서 작가는 거대한 자연을 상징하는 ‘원’과 인간의 흔적을 의미하는 ‘선’을 화면 위에 병치한다. 원은 질서와 순환의 상징이자 자연의 구조를 대변하며, 선은 철사를 종이 뒤에서 눌러 찍어내는 방식으로 표현된다. 이 과정에서 의도와 우연이 교차하며 형성된 흔적은, 인간 삶의 복합성과 예측 불가능성을 반영한다. 작가가 통제할 수 있는 행위 속에서 발생하는 우연은, 우리가 살아가는 삶의 양면성과도 깊이 맞닿아 있다.

제이 영의 작업은 단순한 조형을 넘어 존재와 관계, 경계와 흐름에 대한 시적 사유를 담고 있다. 자연과 인간, 의도와 우연이 교차하는 화면 속에서 삶의 이면과 마주하게 하며, 사유의 가능성을 연다. 《Life(生)》 전시는 우리가 일상 속에서 쉽게 지나치는 물성과 감정의 층위를 다시 바라보게 하며, 불완전하지만 아름다운 삶의 흔적을 새롭게 인식하는 자리가 되길 바란다.

Jay Young draws inspiration from childhood memories spent in nature, discovering sculptural cues in everyday materials such as soil, stones, and branches. A recurring motif in his work, the “wall,” functions as both a boundary and a symbol of coexistence between nature and civilization. It conveys the essential message that humans can never be truly separated from the natural world. This line of thought is intricately connected to the artist’s ongoing exploration of chance and trace, most notably realized in his “Moment” series. The materiality of the wall, along with the accumulated layers of time and marks upon it, mirrors the very fabric of human life.

In the “Like-150mm” series, Jay Young juxtaposes the circle, representing vast nature, with the line, symbolizing human presence. The circle stands for order and cyclical flow, embodying the structure of nature. The line is formed by pressing wire from behind the paper, imprinting it onto the surface. In this process, intentional action intersects with randomness, creating marks that reflect the complexity and unpredictability of human life. The coexistence of control and accident in his work parallels the duality we experience in our own existence.

Jay Young’s practice extends beyond form, offering poetic reflections on existence, connection, boundaries, and flow. His compositions, where nature and humanity, intention and accident converge, invite viewers to confront the deeper layers of life and open up new spaces for contemplation. The exhibition 《Life (生)》 encourages us to revisit the overlooked textures and emotions embedded in everyday materials—revealing the imperfect yet beautiful traces of life in a new light.
