《New Antique》는 서로 다른 재료와 조형 방식을 바탕으로 전통성과 동시대성을 함께 탐구해온 김순철과 최지윤, 두 작가의 작업 세계를 중심으로 구성된다. 이들의 작품은 ‘새로움 속에 깃든 고전성’, 혹은 ‘고전의 방식으로 풀어낸 새로운 감각’을 통해 동시대 미술의 본질적 가치를 다시 질문한다.

김순철 작가는 바느질이라는 반복적이고 내면적인 행위를 통해 감정의 응축과 해소를 시각화한다. 송곳으로 화면을 뚫고 실로 앞면과 뒷면을 오가는 이 작업은 단순한 노동을 넘어 자기 자신과의 깊은 대화를 담고 있다. 실의 중첩은 감정의 켜를 이루고, 그것이 다시 도상으로 응결되며 형상화된다. 작가가 천 위에 바느질로 만들어낸 그릇이나 항아리의 형상은 실제 도기를 재현한 것이 아니라, 마음속 바람을 담는 기호이자 사유의 그릇이다.

최지윤 작가는 보석과 금속이라는 물질적 기반 위에 세밀한 장신구적 조형 감각을 더해, 자연과 인간, 그 사이의 정서적 풍경을 따뜻한 시선으로 포착한다. 그녀의 화면 속 인물과 대상은 서로 교감하며 사랑을 주고받고, 그 안에서 평화로운 감정이 흘러간다. 작가는 마음의 안정과 행복한 기운을 화폭에 담기 위해 온화한 내면 상태를 유지하며 작업에 임한다. 그 감정은 은은한 색감과 부드러운 형태로 드러나, 보는 이에게도 평온한 울림을 전한다.

《New Antique》는 두 작가가 구축한 조형 언어를 통해, 전통과 현대, 물성과 감성 사이의 균형을 재조명하며, 시대를 관통하는 예술의 지속성과 내면의 깊이를 함께 되새기게 한다.

《New Antique》 centers on the artistic worlds of Kim Soonchul and Choi Jiyoon, two artists who have explored the intersection of tradition and contemporaneity through distinct materials and sculptural approaches. Their works raise fundamental questions about the value of contemporary art by evoking classicism within the new or new sensibilities rendered through classical forms.

Kim Soonchul visualizes emotional compression and release through the repetitive and introspective act of sewing. Piercing the canvas with an awl and threading back and forth, his process transcends mere labor and becomes a profound dialogue with the self. The overlapping threads create layers of emotion, which then coalesce into forms. The bowls and jars he renders through stitching are not literal representations of ceramics, but symbols—vessels of thought that contain the artist’s inner longings.

Choi Jiyoon works with jewelry-like delicacy on materials such as gemstones and metals, capturing the emotional landscapes between nature and humanity with a warm gaze. Her subjects—both human and object—engage in tender exchanges of affection and connection, from which a peaceful emotional tone emerges. To convey serenity and happiness in her work, the artist maintains a gentle, calm inner state throughout her process. This emotional clarity surfaces in her soft color palette and fluid forms, resonating a quiet harmony with the viewer.

《New Antique》 invites reflection on the balance between tradition and modernity, material and sentiment, through the visual languages crafted by these two artists. Their works prompt us to reconsider the enduring power of art—its capacity to transcend time while deepening our interior worlds.
