심주하 작가는 여름의 시작을 알리는 양귀비 꽃을 통해 내면의 정서를 화면 위에 풀어낸다. 작가가 태어난 계절에 만개하는 이 꽃은 자연스레 작가의 감정이 투영되는 대상으로 자리 잡았으며, 작품 속에서 다양한 색과 감정의 결을 품는다.

양귀비는 색상에 따라 각기 다른 꽃말을 지니며, 위안과 위로를 상징한다. 이는 작가의 작업이 지닌 정서적 기반과 맞닿아 있다. 화면의 여백은 시각적인 여유를 제공하는 동시에, 관람자의 내면을 투사할 수 있는 감성적 공간으로 작동한다. 장지 위에 먹을 여러 겹 입히고 그 위에 채색한 꽃들은 미묘한 농담의 차이를 가지며, 고요하고 섬세하게 존재감을 드러낸다. 겹겹이 쌓인 꽃잎은 서로를 비추고 중첩되며, 그 자체로 어우러짐과 고요한 울림을 전달한다. 어두운 바탕에서부터 번져 나오는 듯한 투명한 빛의 표현은 생명의 탄생과 존재의 빛을 상징적으로 드러낸다. 이러한 분채 물감 특유의 은은한 발색은 화면에 감각적 밀도를 부여하며, 정제된 조형언어로 감정의 진폭을 섬세하게 전달한다.

작가의 양귀비 시리즈는 첫인상에서 다채로운 색과 유려한 곡선의 향연으로 다가오지만, 시간과 시선을 두고 마주하면 그 안에 응축된 감정의 결을 발견하게 된다. 꽃의 형태는 일정한 리듬을 따르되 단순한 반복이 아닌, 생과 소멸, 빛과 어둠, 고난과 성장의 공존을 품는다.

한 송이의 꽃이 피고 지는 과정 속에 존재의 아름다움과 감정의 진실을 담아낸 심주하의 회화는, 평범해 보이는 자연의 형상을 통해 우리 내면의 섬세한 울림을 환기시킨다. 그녀의 작업은 단순한 형상의 재현을 넘어, 감각과 사유를 자극하는 정제된 감정의 회화로 자리한다.

Artist Jooha Shim unfolds layers of inner emotion on canvas through the motif of the poppy—a flower that signals the arrival of summer and blooms in the season of her birth. Naturally becoming a vessel of emotional projection, the poppy in her work embodies a spectrum of color and feeling, serving as both subject and symbol.

Each poppy carries its own meaning depending on its hue, often associated with solace and comfort—qualities that align closely with the emotional grounding of Shim’s work. The generous use of yohak (negative space) offers not only visual breathing room but also creates an emotive space where viewers may project their own inner states. On traditional hanji paper, layers of ink and pigment are carefully built up, creating subtle gradations and delicate textures. The resulting blooms reveal themselves gently and quietly—petals overlap, reflect, and resonate with one another, embodying harmony and a soft echo of presence.

The expression of translucent light, seemingly emanating from within a dark backdrop, evokes the symbolic birth of life and illumination of being. The muted brilliance of bunchae pigments (traditional Korean mineral-based colors) adds sensory depth to the surface, amplifying the emotional resonance through a refined visual language.

While Shim’s Poppy series initially presents a vibrant display of color and graceful curves, closer and prolonged engagement reveals nuanced layers of feeling woven within. The repetition of floral forms follows a rhythm that is never mechanical—each variation embracing both life and decay, light and shadow, struggle and growth.

Through the ephemeral blooming and fading of a single flower, Jooha Shim captures the beauty of existence and the truth of emotion. Her paintings transcend mere representation of natural forms, offering a distilled expression of feeling that quietly stirs the viewer’s own sensibilities—becoming meditative landscapes of perception and reflection.
