《끝없는 이야기(An Endless Story)》는 강동현, 강지연 두 작가의 상반된 조형 언어를 통해 ‘상호작용’이라는 주제를 탐색한다. 서로 다른 접근과 매체를 통해 표현된 작품들은 외부 세계와 개인 내면에서 일어나는 끊임없는 관계 맺음을 다양한 시각으로 조망한다.

강동현 작가는 생명과 관계의 구조에 대한 관심을 바탕으로, 그물망 형태의 스테인리스 조형을 통해 순환과 공존의 메시지를 구현한다. 작가에게 ‘관계’는 혈관, 식물의 세포, 통신망, 항로 등처럼 유기적이며 끊임없이 재구성되는 네트워크다. 이는 알렉스 라이트의 말처럼, 위계가 아닌 상호작용으로 진화하는 구조다. 용접된 스틸로 형성된 공간은 비어 있으나 가득 차 있고, 안과 밖의 경계를 허물며 숲처럼 생명이 응집되는 구조를 이룬다. 비어 있음과 채워짐, 분리와 연결 사이를 오가는 이 조형물은 생명의 순환과 상호 공존을 형상화한다.

강지연 작가는 인간 내면에 잠재한 ‘욕망’의 심리를 회화와 설치로 풀어낸다. 진화와 결핍, 과잉과 절제라는 양가적 요소들이 인간의 삶에 어떻게 작용하는지를 다층적으로 보여준다. 바다를 배경으로 한 ‘Holiday’ 시리즈는 일탈에 대한 소망을, ‘Desire’ 시리즈는 자개로 장식된 여성 형상을 통해 화려함을 갈망하는 욕망의 표면과 그 이면을 드러낸다. 작품 속 인물의 낯선 자세와 구도는 이상과 현실, 충만과 결핍 사이의 긴장을 암시하며, 심리적 욕망이 갖는 이중성과 역설을 시각화한다.

이번 전시는 두 작가가 각자의 조형 언어로 풀어낸 ‘관계’와 ‘욕망’이라는 주제를 통해, 사회와 자아, 외부와 내부를 연결하는 예술의 역할을 다시금 성찰하게 한다. 강동현과 강지연의 작업은 서로 다른 방향에서 출발하지만, 결국 상호작용이라는 본질적 개념 아래 교차하며, 동시대 삶의 구조와 감각을 새롭게 사유할 수 있는 여지를 마련한다.

An Endless Story brings together artists Donghyun Kang and Jiyeon Kang, whose contrasting visual languages converge to explore the theme of interaction. Through distinct media and approaches, their works examine the continuous interplay between the external world and the inner self, offering multifaceted perspectives on the ways we form and negotiate relationships.

Donghyun Kang investigates the structures of life and connection through stainless steel sculptures in the form of intricate networks. For the artist, relationship is an organic, ever-evolving system—akin to blood vessels, plant cells, communication lines, or flight paths. These networks are non-hierarchical, evolving through interaction rather than dominance, echoing the words of Alex Wright. The welded steel structures create spaces that are both empty and full, dissolving boundaries between inside and outside, much like a forest where life densely coalesces. These forms, oscillating between void and fullness, separation and linkage, visually embody the cycles of life and the potential for coexistence.

Jiyeon Kang, by contrast, delves into the psychology of desire embedded in the human subconscious, working through painting and installation. Her practice unpacks the ambivalent forces of evolution and lack, excess and restraint, revealing how they shape human experience. In her Holiday series, set against oceanic backdrops, the longing for escape is rendered as a visual motif. In Desire, ornamented female figures inlaid with mother-of-pearl expose both the surface allure of glamour and the complex undercurrents beneath. The disjointed poses and uncanny compositions hint at the tension between ideal and reality, wholeness and absence—externalizing the duality and paradox of desire.

Together, the two artists reframe the themes of relationship and desire through their respective practices, encouraging reflection on art’s role in linking society with the self, and the outer world with the inner one. Though their approaches differ, the works intersect around the essential concept of interaction—opening space for reimagining the structures, sensibilities, and emotional undercurrents of contemporary life.
