양시영 개인전

《Atypical Play》는 발달장애 예술가 양시영 작가가 감각과 내면의 언어로 빚어낸, 비정형적 표현의 자유로움과 순수한 시선을 담은 개인전이다. 이번 전시는 언어로 환원되지 않는 감정과 직관, 그리고 세상을 바라보는 독자적인 시선이 어떻게 이미지로 형상화되는지를 탐색한다.

양시영 작가는 서번트 증후군과 발달 장애 진단을 받은 하티즘(Hautism) 작가로, 다섯 살 무렵 미술 치료를 시작한 이후 탁월한 조형 감각과 표현력을 드러내며 작가로 성장해왔다.
하티즘은 '마음속에서 그리고 싶은 것을 솔직하게 표현하는 발달장애 예술가의 화풍'을 지칭하며, 그의 작업은 기존의 회화적 문법이나 관습을 따르지 않지만, 그로 인해 오히려 더욱 직관적이고 본질적인 감각을 드러낸다.

작가는 일상에서 마주한 감정과 대상에 대한 기억을 섬세하게 붙잡아내며, 그것을 언어가 아닌 이미지로 전환한다. 그림 속 인물들은 단순한 초상이라기보다는, 작가 자신의 감정적 잔향과 내면적 기억의 잔재들을 되새긴 흔적에 가깝다. 이러한 표현 방식은 ‘묘사’보다는 ‘재현’에 가까우며, 관람자로 하여금 이미지의 표면 너머에 존재하는 감각과 진동을 함께 체험하게 한다. 양시영 작가의 작업은 마치 아이의 순수한 시선으로 세상을 마주한 듯한 명료함과 따뜻함을 품고 있다. 모든 사물과 자연은 그에게 있어 인식 이전의 감각으로 다가오며, 작가는 이를 생생하고 솔직한 방식으로 화면에 펼쳐낸다. 

작가의 작업은 표현의 다양성과 감각의 확장 가능성을 보여주며, 미술이 지닌 치유와 소통의 본질에 대한 물음을 다시 떠올리게 한다. 《Atypical Play》는 회화라는 형식 안에 담긴 자유로운 몸짓과 감정의 언어를 통해, 예술이 어떤 방식으로 마음의 풍경을 비추고 또 이어줄 수 있는지를 보여준다.

《Atypical Play》 is a solo exhibition by artist Siyoung Yang, whose work reflects the freedom of atypical expression and a pure, intuitive gaze shaped by sensory and emotional language. This exhibition explores how emotions, intuition, and a unique perspective on the world — elements that resist reduction to words — are transformed into visual imagery.

Siyoung Yang is an artist with Hautism, a term combining high-functioning autism and artistic expression, who was diagnosed with both savant syndrome and developmental disabilities. He began art therapy around the age of five, and since then, has demonstrated an exceptional sense of form and expression, growing steadily into his role as an artist. Hautism refers to the raw, honest expression of what an artist with developmental disabilities wants to depict from the heart — a visual language that defies traditional painterly conventions, yet reveals a more intuitive and essential sensibility because of that very difference.

The artist carefully captures and preserves memories of emotions and objects encountered in daily life, translating them into images rather than words. The figures in his paintings are less traditional portraits and more traces of emotional echoes and internal memories. His mode of expression leans toward evocation rather than description, inviting viewers to experience the sensory vibrations that lie beneath the surface of the image. Yang’s work possesses the clarity and warmth of a child’s innocent gaze — a way of seeing the world with unfiltered sincerity. Every object and element of nature appears to him as pure sensation before interpretation, and he renders these impressions vividly and candidly on the canvas.

His work reveals the richness of expressive diversity and the expansive potential of human perception, prompting us to reconsider the essential roles of healing and communication in art. 《Atypical Play》 shows how the language of emotion and the freedom of movement within painting can illuminate and connect the landscapes of the heart.
