정관모, 김혜원

대한민국 대표 조각가 부부, 정관모·김혜원 작가는 오랜 시간 각자의 조형 언어를 통해 독자적인 예술 세계를 구축해왔으며, 동시에 서로의 창작 과정에 깊은 영감을 주고받으며 내면의 미학을 확장시켜왔다. 이번 전시는 그러한 예술적 교류와 조우의 기록이자, 한 공간 안에서 형성된 조형적 긴장과 조화를 담아낸 결과물이다.

정관모 작가는 ‘기념비적인 윤목(輪木)’ 연작을 통해 한국 전통 유물에서 발견되는 조형미를 현대적인 조각 어법으로 재해석해왔다. 그의 작업은 과거의 정신성과 조형의 본질을 현재의 조형 언어로 변환하며, 시간성과 상징성에 대한 깊은 탐구를 시도한다. 

김혜원 작가는 ‘섬’ 연작을 통해 여체의 사실적 재현에서 벗어나 내면의 감성과 구조적 형식을 아우르는 새로운 구상 조각의 방향을 제시한다. ‘섬’은 고립과 자율, 사유와 정체성이라는 키워드를 통해 존재의 본질을 환기 시킨다.

이번 전시의 제목인 《연(緣)》은 단지 두 작가의 관계를 의미하는 것이 아니라, 이들이 구축한 예술적 언어가 어떻게 나란히 성장하고 교감하며 전개되어왔는지를 상징적으로 함축한다. 각기 다른 조형 세계가 한 공간 안에서 서로를 비추고 공명하며 이루는 이 흐름은, 예술을 통한 깊은 연결의 의미를 재인식하게 한다.

예술가의 삶과 창작이 교차하는 이 지점에서, 조형 언어는 다시 삶으로 이어진다. 《연(緣)》展은 그 과정을 따라가며, 삶과 예술의 유기적 관계를 성찰하게 하는 기회가 되길 바란다.

From September 9, 2024, Hedwig Gallery presents the duo exhibition Yeon (緣) at H.art LAB 89, located on the 9th floor of Hyundai Department Store, Trade Center Branch. The exhibition features two of Korea’s most renowned sculptors — the artist couple Kwanmo Jung and Hyewon Kim. Both artists have spent decades developing their distinct sculptural languages, each building an independent artistic world. At the same time, they have continuously inspired one another’s creative journeys, expanding their shared inner aesthetics. This exhibition serves as a record of that artistic dialogue and encounter — a space where sculptural tension and harmony converge.

Kwanmo Jung reinterprets the sculptural beauty found in traditional Korean relics through his monumental Wooden Wheel (윤목) series, using a contemporary sculptural idiom. His works transform the spiritual essence and formal purity of the past into a modern vocabulary, offering a deep reflection on temporality and symbolism.

In contrast, Hyewon Kim’s Island series moves away from literal representations of the female body, proposing a new direction in figurative sculpture that merges emotional depth with structural form. Her “islands” evoke themes of solitude and autonomy, contemplation and identity — prompting reflection on the essence of existence.

The title Yeon (緣) signifies more than the relationship between two artists. It symbolically encapsulates how their artistic languages have grown in parallel, resonating and evolving together. Within a shared space, their distinct sculptural worlds mirror and echo one another, inviting viewers to rediscover the meaning of deep connection through art.

At this intersection of life and creation, sculptural language is once again intertwined with life itself. Yeon (緣) offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the organic relationship between life and art.
