오늘, 당신은 어떤 모습으로 세상과 마주하고 있나요?

삶은 늘 예측할 수 없는 선택과 반응, 장난스럽고 즉흥적인 감정들로 채워진다. 우리는 각자의 리듬으로 일상과 관계를 만들어가며, 그 속에서 스스로의 색과 감각을 조형해간다. 《Playful Whim》은 바로 이러한 다름과 변화의 흐름 속에서 포착한 유쾌하고도 따뜻한 순간들을 담아낸다.

박세연 작가는 ‘가면’을 통해 정체성과 용기에 대해 이야기한다. 처음에는 낯설고 무겁게 느껴졌던 가면이 사실은 자신의 일부이며, 그것을 쓰는 것도 벗는 것도 온전히 자기 선택임을 깨닫는 과정이 작품 속에 담겨 있다. 우리는 다양한 얼굴로 살아가지만, 어떤 모습이든 본질적인 ‘나’는 변하지 않는다는 메시지를 전한다.

작가의 작업은 어린 시절 용기를 주던 상상의 친구들에서 출발한다. 동물 캐릭터들은 히어로처럼 가면을 쓰고 “나는 용감해!”라고 외치며, 내면의 힘을 드러낸다. 이 유쾌한 장면들은 타인의 시선에 흔들리는 자아를 다정하게 격려하며, 자기 자신을 긍정하는 감정의 순간을 구성한다.

황승현 작가는 흑백의 세계 속에서 자신만의 색을 찾아가는 과정을 시각화한다. 그의 작업 속 무대인 ‘이상한 사막’은 각자가 자기만의 리듬을 만들어가는 공간이다. 완벽하지 않은 몸짓도, 어색한 움직임도 하나의 표현으로 받아들이며, 흔적을 남기고 색을 발견하는 여정을 그려낸다. 반복적으로 등장하는 선인장은 관계 속 상처와 보듬음을 동시에 상징하며, 단단한 종이로 구현된 조형은 유연함과 강인함이 공존하는 내면의 구조를 암시한다. 따가운 가시 너머에도 서로를 안아줄 수 있는 가능성이 있다는 믿음이 이 작업의 정서적 기반을 이룬다.

《Playful Whim》은 서로 다른 두 감각이 교차하며 만들어낸 장면들로, 자기 표현과 감정의 리듬, 관계의 온도를 회화적 언어로 풀어낸다. 색을 찾고, 리듬을 따라가며, 우리가 미처 의식하지 못했던 용기의 감각을 새롭게 마주하는 시간이 되기를 바란다.

How are you facing the world today?

Life is always filled with unpredictable choices, spontaneous reactions, and playful emotions. We each build our daily lives and relationships in our own rhythm, shaping our unique colors and senses within them. Playful Whim captures the delightful and warm moments that emerge from this flow of difference and change.

Artist Seyoun Park explores themes of identity and courage through the motif of “masks.” Her works depict the journey of realizing that the mask—initially felt as foreign and burdensome—is in fact a part of oneself, and that both wearing and removing it are acts of one’s own volition. Though we live with many faces, she conveys the message that the core “self” remains unchanged.

Her work is inspired by the imaginary friends of childhood who once gave her courage. Animal characters appear wearing masks like heroes, shouting, “I am brave!” and revealing their inner strength. These playful scenes gently encourage selves shaken by others’ perceptions and present moments of emotional affirmation and self-acceptance.

Artist Seunghyun Hwang visualizes the process of finding one’s own color within a black-and-white world. The “Strange Desert” in his work is a stage where each person creates their own rhythm. Even imperfect gestures and awkward movements are embraced as expressions, forming a journey of leaving traces and discovering color. The recurring motif of the cactus symbolizes both wounds and care within relationships, while the rigid paper sculptures suggest an internal structure where flexibility and resilience coexist. His work is grounded in the belief that, even beyond sharp thorns, there is the possibility of embracing one another.

Playful Whim presents scenes born from the intersection of two distinct sensibilities, translating self-expression, emotional rhythm, and the warmth of relationships into painterly language. May this exhibition be a moment to rediscover the subtle sensations of courage we didn’t even know we had—by following the colors, the rhythms, and ourselves.
