헤드비갤러리는 독일 작가 게하드 칸츠(Gerd Kanz)의 첫 국내 개인전 《Essence of Growth》를 개최한다. 2024년 아트부산을 통해 국내에 처음 소개된 이후, 강렬한 조형성과 독자적인 재료 감각으로 주목받은 작가는 회화와 조각의 경계를 허물며 자신만의 예술 언어를 구축해왔다.

게하드 칸츠는 전통적인 캔버스가 아닌 나무 패널 위에서 작업하며, 망치와 끌을 이용한 조각적 드로잉을 통해 회화의 표면을 입체적으로 재구성한다. 짧고 반복적인 동작으로 새겨진 선들은 형상을 만드는 동시에, 시간의 축적과 감각의 밀도를 시각화한다. 그 표면은 회화인 동시에 조각이며, 흔적의 층위가 얽혀 만들어낸 하나의 조형적 지층처럼 읽힌다.

작가는 오일, 템페라, 안료 등 다양한 재료를 거듭 쌓아가며, 풍부한 색감과 감각적인 대비를 만들어낸다. 그 과정에서 형성되는 색과 선, 그림자의 상호작용은 즉흥성과 통제, 물질성과 감각성 사이의 긴장을 보여준다. 이러한 창작 방식은 작가가 중요하게 여기는 Spontanität(스폰테인탈리티)*즉흥성과 질서의 균형 개념을 조형적으로 실현한다.

20세기 중반 유럽 앵포르멜(Art Informel) 운동의 영향을 받은 칸츠는, 형식과 규범을 벗어난 자유로운 회화 실천을 이어오고 있다. 그러나 그의 표현은 단순한 형식에 그치지 않고, 재료의 물성에 기반한 치밀한 조형 구조와 감정의 흔적이 응축된 표면성을 동반한다. 푸른 계열의 작업에서는 유기적인 흐름과 인공적인 색감 사이의 대비가 감각적인 긴장감을 자아낸다. 스티치처럼 남겨진 거친 가장자리, 급격한 방향 전환, 의도적인 생략은 작업 과정 자체의 역동성과 감정의 흔적을 고스란히 드러낸다.

게하드 칸츠의 작업은 선, 색, 그림자, 재료 간의 섬세한 상호작용 속에서 추상적이면서도 깊이 있는 공간을 만들어낸다.

Hedwig Gallery presents Essence of Growth, the first solo exhibition in Korea by German artist Gerd Kanz. After being introduced to Korean audiences through Art Busan 2024, Kanz has gained attention for his powerful sense of form and distinctive material sensibility. Breaking the boundaries between painting and sculpture, he has developed a unique visual language.

Gerd Kanz works not on traditional canvas but on wooden panels, reconstructing the surface of painting in a sculptural way through engraved drawings made with hammers and chisels. The short, repetitive marks inscribed on the surface not only form shapes but also visualize the accumulation of time and density of perception. The resulting surfaces exist simultaneously as painting and sculpture—readable as stratified layers of traces and form.

By repeatedly layering oil, tempera, and pigments, the artist builds up rich color and sensuous contrasts. The interplay of color, line, and shadow—formed through this process—reveals a tension between spontaneity and control, materiality and sensibility. This method of creation gives visual form to the artist’s core concept of Spontanität, or the balance between spontaneity and order.

Influenced by the Art Informel movement of mid-20th-century Europe, Kanz continues a freeform painterly practice that resists rigid form and convention. Yet, his expression is not purely gestural—it is grounded in the physicality of materials and marked by meticulously constructed compositions and surfaces saturated with emotional traces. His works in blue tones create a sensory tension through contrasts between organic flow and artificial hues. Rough, stitch-like edges, abrupt shifts in direction, and deliberate omissions reveal the dynamism of his process and the emotional imprint embedded in it.

In Kanz’s work, the subtle interplay between line, color, shadow, and material generates an abstract yet deeply resonant space.
