Simon Graw, Joanna Morani

독일 헤드비갤러리(Hedwig Gallery)에서는 조형 언어를 통해 인간과 자연, 감정과 시간의 감각을 탐색하는 두 작가, Simon Graw와 Joanna Morani의 2인전 《Simon Graw & Joanna Morani 展》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 물성과 감각, 도전과 수용, 정제됨과 우연성이라는 상반된 조형 세계를 통해 예술이 현실의 구조를 어떻게 재구성할 수 있는지를 질문한다.

Simon Graw는 크기와 물성의 대비를 통해 인간 존재의 내면을 형상화하는 조각 작업을 이어오고 있다. 목재로 제작된 거대한 구조물과 그 위에 놓인 작은 금색 인물의 형상은, 도전하는 인간의 태도와 그 내면의 불안과 아름다움을 함께 드러낸다. 금색 인물은 위태로워 보이지만 동시에 의지와 열망의 상징이 되며, 진취성과 무모함 사이에서 흔들리는 인간의 감정적 풍경을 입체적으로 제시한다. 작가는 간결한 형상 안에 정서적 밀도와 조형적 긴장감을 응축시켜, 관람자로 하여금 존재의 불균형과 그 안의 아름다움을 직면하게 한다.

Joanna Morani는 일본의 미학 ‘와비-사비(Wabi-Sabi)’에서 영감을 받아, 불완전함의 아름다움과 자연의 흐름을 조형적으로 풀어낸다. 작업은 자연의 진정성과 감각의 흐름을 기반으로 한다. 우연한 흔적과 비계획적인 과정을 작품의 일부로 수용하며, 통제되지 않은 시간의 흔적을 고스란히 담아낸다. 인위적이지 않은 자연스러운 제작 과정을 거쳐 완성된 조형물은, 시간의 경과에 따라 형태를 달리하며 통제되지 않은 무작위성을 구현한다. 색소, 목재, 접착제와 같은 자연 소재는 정제되지 않은 물성과 흐름을 유지하며, 자연 그 자체가 형상화한 구조물처럼 다가온다. 작가는 완결된 결과물보다 생성 과정에서 발생하는 감각, 빛의 흔들림, 재료의 반응을 더 중요하게 여긴다. 조형 언어는 감각의 시간성을 품은 하나의 흐름이자, 감정과 인식을 여는 통로가 된다.

이번 전시는 인간의 내면과 자연의 질서를 두 작가의 시선을 통해 조망하며, 예술이 감각을 환기하고 물성과 시간, 감정을 재배치하는 방식을 성찰하는 계기를 제공한다. 서로 다른 미학이 빚어낸 이 만남으로 예술이 세계를 감각하고 다시 사유하는 방식에  질문을 던진다.

Hedwig Gallery in Germany presents a two-person exhibition, 《Simon Graw & Joanna Morani》, featuring artists Simon Graw and Joanna Morani, who explore the relationship between humans and nature, emotion and time through their distinct sculptural languages. The exhibition questions how art can reconstruct the structures of reality by navigating opposing forces such as materiality and perception, challenge and acceptance, refinement and chance.

Simon Graw creates sculptural works that embody the inner state of human existence through contrasts in scale and material. His large wooden structures are juxtaposed with small golden human figures, evoking both the fragility and the aspiration of the human spirit. These golden figures, though appearing precarious, symbolize willpower and desire—presenting an emotional landscape that wavers between ambition and recklessness. Within his minimalist forms, Graw compresses emotional density and sculptural tension, inviting viewers to confront the imbalance of existence and the beauty that lies within it.

Joanna Morani, inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, explores the beauty of imperfection and the natural flow of time. Her practice embraces authenticity and sensory flow in nature, accepting traces of chance and unplanned processes as integral to the work. Her sculptures, shaped by uncontrolled elements over time, embody randomness and organic transformation. Using natural materials such as pigment, wood, and adhesive, she preserves the raw physicality and flow of the elements, creating forms that appear as if sculpted by nature itself. For Morani, the sensory experience, the flicker of light, and the material’s reaction during the process hold greater importance than the final form. Her sculptural language becomes a temporal flow of perception—a passage to emotion and awareness.

This exhibition offers a dual perspective on the human psyche and the order of nature, reflecting on how art evokes sensation and reconfigures material, time, and emotion. The encounter of these contrasting aesthetics poses essential questions about how art senses and rethinks the world.
