욕망은 인간 존재를 구성하는 본능적 감정이며, 삶을 이끄는 원동력이자 때로는 파국을 부르는 유혹으로 작용한다. 부, 권력, 사랑, 명예 등 다양한 모습으로 나타나는 욕망은 인간의 내면 깊은 층위를 비추며, 그 양면성은 오랫동안 예술의 본질적 탐구 대상이 되어왔다. 이번 전시는 서로 다른 조형 언어를 바탕으로 욕망의 얼굴을 마주하는 두 작가, 최나리와 한상윤의 시선을 통해, 오늘날 욕망이 드러내는 복합적인 양상을 주목한다.

최나리 작가는 마요네즈와 케첩 튜브에서 착안한 캐릭터 ‘Mayo’와 ‘Mato’를 남성과 여성이라는 상징적 코드로 전환하여, 인간의 호기심, 타자에 대한 욕망, 그리고 은밀한 내면의 감정을 은유적으로 표현한다. 경쾌한 색채와 귀여운 도상으로 구성된 화면은 명랑해 보이지만, 그 이면에는 인간의 억압된 욕망과 무의식이 숨겨져 있다. 익살스럽지만 결코 가볍지 않은 이중적 화면은 욕망을 둘러싼 모순된 감정들을 드러낸다.

한상윤 작가는 돼지라는 상징을 통해 인간의 물질적 욕망을 정면으로 다룬다. 초기에는 과도한 소비와 소유에 대한 풍자에서 출발했지만, 어느 순간 욕망 자체도 행복을 꿈꾸는 인간의 자연스러운 표현이라는 인식에 이르렀다. 금박과 은박으로 장식된 화면 위에 등장하는 ‘행복한 돼지’는 풍요를 욕망하면서도 소소한 기쁨을 갈망하는 현대인의 자화상과도 같다.

두 작가의 작업은 욕망을 감춰야 할 결핍의 흔적이 아니라, 삶에 에너지를 부여하는 실존의 조건으로 다시 바라보게 만든다. 이번 전시로 욕망이라는 감정을 통해 우리가 얼마나 인간적인 존재인지, 그리고 그 감정이 예술을 통해 어떻게 다시 사유되고 확장되길 바란다.

Desire is an instinctive emotion that shapes human existence—a driving force of life and, at times, a seductive path to downfall. Manifesting in forms such as wealth, power, love, and honor, desire reveals the deep layers of the human psyche. Its dual nature has long been a central subject of artistic inquiry. This exhibition highlights the multifaceted expressions of desire as seen through the distinct visual languages of two artists—Choi Nari and Han Sangyoon—and examines how desire manifests in today’s world.

Choi Nari presents the characters “Mayo” and “Mato,” inspired by mayonnaise and ketchup tubes, reinterpreted as symbolic codes of masculinity and femininity. Through these figures, she metaphorically explores human curiosity, desire for the other, and secret inner emotions. While the vivid colors and playful imagery appear cheerful, they veil the repressed desires and unconscious mind beneath. The work’s humorous yet weighty tone reveals the contradictions inherent in desire.

Han Sangyoon, on the other hand, confronts material desire head-on through the symbol of the pig. Though his early works satirized excessive consumption and ownership, his perspective has shifted to viewing desire itself as a natural expression of the human longing for happiness. His “happy pigs,” adorned in gold and silver foil, become portraits of modern individuals who yearn not only for abundance but also for modest joys.

Together, the two artists’ works invite viewers to reconsider desire—not as a flaw to be hidden, but as a vital condition of existence that infuses life with energy. Through this exhibition, we hope to reflect on how deeply human our desires make us, and how art can reframe and expand these emotions into new realms of thought.
